Spotter

A required second person on the boat who watches the surfer at all times so the driver can focus solely on driving.

A spotter is the dedicated observer aboard a wakesurf boat whose job is to keep eyes on the rider at all times. Having a spotter keeps the driver's attention solely on driving the boat, which is essential at the slow speeds and close distances of wakesurfing. The spotter communicates the rider's status—up, down, in trouble—to the driver and signals other boaters.

The spotter also handles the rope: after the surfer throws it back, the spotter pulls it completely into the boat so it isn't dangling near the rider or in the water where it could foul. A spotter is a standard legal and safety requirement for towed watersports.
