Methodology
WakeSurfSpots is a neutral reference. We compile public and published data — never synthetic data — and cite the source on every page. Here is exactly where the numbers come from and what they do and don't tell you.
Wakesurf spots
Our directory of 119 spots across 39 states is compiled from documented wakesurf and wakeboard destinations (lake associations, tourism resources, wake schools, and rider guides), each with a cited source. Waterbody existence and size draw on the USGS National Hydrography Dataset. A spot's presence here describes where people ride — not a guarantee that wake boats are currently legal there. Always confirm local rules first.
Best-season windows
The "best season" on each spot page is derived from real air-temperature climatology (Open-Meteo, 2019–2023 daily highs at the spot's coordinates). We mark the months whose average daily high is comfortably warm for the sport. It is a weather guide, not a measurement of water temperature, and conditions vary year to year.
Boat & board specifications
Specs for 21 boats and 28 boards are compiled from manufacturer pages and authorized-retailer listings. Figures reflect published specifications at the time of review and change by model year. Where a source does not publish a value, we leave it blank rather than estimate. Every spec page links its source.
Wake-boat rules
Our rules tracker covers 49 states. Each summary is drawn from the responsible state boating or natural-resources agency, with a link to the primary source. Wake-boat regulation is fragmented and fast-moving — many states set rules at the lake or county level — so our summaries are a starting point, not legal advice. The linked agency page governs.
Tools
The ballast and board-size calculators apply transparent, documented heuristics based on common setup practice (surf-side-biased ballast, ~10.5–11.5 mph, weight- and skill-based board length). They produce a sensible starting point, not a guaranteed result — every hull and rider is different.
