Pumping
Turning rhythmically up and down the face of the wake to generate speed and maintain momentum without the rope.
Pumping is the fundamental speed-generating technique in rope-free wakesurfing. By carving up toward the lip and then driving back down toward the trough, the rider converts the wave's energy into forward drive, much as a skateboarder pumps a ramp. It is what lets a rider stay in the pocket, recover lost ground, and build the speed needed for tricks.
Without pumping a rider tends to drift back off the wave's push and fall off the back. Mastering a smooth pump up and down the face is the gateway skill between simply riding the rope-free wave and progressing to carves, slashes, and airs.
