Carving

Drawing smooth, arcing turns up and down the wave face on rail, the signature flowing maneuver of surf-style wakesurfing.

Carving means riding the board on its edge (rail) through a smooth, controlled turn rather than a flat, skidded slide. On the wake it describes the drawn-out turns a surf-style rider links up and down the face, leaning into the rail and using the fins for drive and hold. It is both a way to express style and a way to manage position and speed on the wave.

Surf-style boards, with their extra rocker and larger fins, are built specifically for aggressive, fluid carving, while flatter skim boards trade carve-ability for spin-ability.
