Rail

The edge of the wakesurf board running along each side, which the rider leans onto to carve and which can be grabbed in airs.

The rails are the side edges of the board, and engaging a rail (leaning the board onto its edge) is what makes a carve bite and hold rather than skid. Rail shape, sharper or more rounded, influences how the board turns and releases. Surf-style boards typically have rails tuned for holding through deep carves.

In aerial tricks, a grab is named in part by which rail the rider grabs. Understanding rail engagement is central to both carving cleanly and breaking the board loose for slides.
